from an engagement in big sur to a private reception on family land
tonya & austin: wedding edition
Ever since their Big Sur coast engagement session (which I wrote about on this blog a few months ago), I was counting down the days to their wedding. 2025 was an insane year for me, and there was no better way to end it than documenting these two tie the knot in December. It was a beautiful day full of family, friends & true joy; I felt so welcomed by everyone, and so honored to have been there to capture such amazing memories. It was an emotional day for all attending, myself included, and I can't wait to see where married life takes these two. 🥹

start to finish
I love starting the day with getting ready, which is truly the 'opening chapter' of wedding day. I move between rooms, capturing the memories of your sister-in-law steaming your veil, or sisters helping one another into their dresses. Music & laughter fill the house while everyone bustles about, excited (and a little nervous) for what's to come. As a bonus, exposure to the camera earlier in the day helps ease you into it so it's not as jarring for my camera-shy clients.
The word I always come back to when it comes to weddings is 'storytelling'. I want you to remember what the day felt like when looking back on your album, the love & joy & tears.
We start with the anticipation in the morning, the build-up to vows. For Tonya and Austin, they wanted their first look to be at the altar, but a pre-ceremony prayer was important to them. So, we set them up, eyes closed, holding hands at a corner while Austin prayed--the excitement builds, both eager to finally see one another. Then comes the overwhelming emotions of finally seeing each other as Tonya walks down the aisle, tears in the eyes of just about every person there (especially Austin). Finally, chapter 2 closes with the pure love & relief of finally being able to say 'I do'. The remaining story follows the celebration, with two families becoming one, eager to party with the newlyweds. This is the story of your day, of your love--and the love others have for you, as well.
some amazing notes from this wedding:
- Tonya's rosary was her 'something blue' + 'something borrowed' from her sister. The rosary itself belonged to their grandmother.
- The ceremony was at the church they attend, while the reception was held at her brother's amazing property. The family banded together, creating their own decorations & set up which I always love.
- For their cake toppers, they chose custom Legos of themselves & Tonya's two dogs (who also attended their engagement session seen here!)
- Speaking of cake, since Tonya is GF, her aunt made the cake herself to make sure Tonya was accommodated on her special day. Again, the community here is incredible.
- To honor Austin's Germanic heritage, they brought custom drinking horns with their name & wedding date on it--as well as some pretty incredible fur coats, featured in golden hour.
- As an extra memory, they hired a painter who stayed throughout reception working on a portrait the couple got to take home. Shoutout to Jillian Williams, who you can find at her website here!
